EMIL KOZAK

artworks/photos Emil Kozak

I was contacted by a Barcelona based designer named Emil Kozak recently. Emil's work is super cool and I was stoked that he sent this new banner design for this site. What a great human being. Little did I know he would quickly climb the ranks to be one of my new favorites. Emil is a highly accomplished graphic designer and artist. He has designed surfboards for Al Merrick and Kelly Slater, stuff for Nike and Vans, has his own clothing label, and even has an artist series MP3 player. He just released a book that looks really slick. Seamouse approved.

Make sure you have more than 5 minutes to burn, and then check out his site and immerse yourself in something fresh.

CYRUS CUSTOM HAND PLANES

Cyrus Sutton is making custom handplanes this summer for anyone who is interested. They are being made of paulownia wood which is the same material the Wegeners use to shape alaias. These designs are hydrodynamically sound to maintain effcient planing. I have one and it is rad. Every one produced is a custom design and all are one-off pieces of ridable art. ($150-$250). Email cyrus@cyrussutton.com if you're interested.

TORTOISE / TOMMY GUERRERO

Proper logging waves have been rolling in and I've been working on some custom pieces for some really nice folks. Hitting the road for New Jersey tomorrow. Its Wednesday and almost the holiday weekend. Here's something to get you thinking about mellower times....

GROUP SHOW

I'm doing a group show in Montauk with some cool folks. I sure like it when good graphic designers put good show posters together. I think its a difficult endeavor.

TY WILLIAMS IN JAPAN

Ty Williams moved to Japan for awhile. He will probably be doing lots of creative things over there. He's keepin us up to date over on his website. If you're in Japan you should look him up for noodles, waves, and paint slinging.

AN ECONOLINE VIA CYRUS

My good friend Cyrus Sutton is down south in Mex somewhere shooting with a lovely new musician for a new film. Because he knows of my fondness for old surf rigs and shooting them, he sent me a couple of snaps of this beauty lurking around California.

LIVE PAINTING @ GREENROOM FESTIVAL

Here is a shot of the live paint wall mural Heather Brown and Yusuke Hanai did at the Greenroom Festival. They worked on it on both Saturday and Sunday.

ANALOG

Shakas and Singlefins is now 100% analog.

Well, I still have to scan everything to get it to the internets but I'm done shooting digital photos for awhile, and will just be shooting film.

There's an old debate (thats pretty tiresome) regarding Mr Pixel and Mrs Grain. For me its quite simple. My friend in Japan, Yusuke Hanai, shot some photos with an old manual Canon film camera along with a digital DSLR during the Greenroom Festival. When I got home and looked at the photos, it was night and day to me. I've always been a fan of convenience and for digital you can't beat it. Not everyone wants to spend the extra money that is so hard to come by these days on processing film. Some do as a hobby. But I don't like to shoot photos for convenience anymore. I like to shoot to make something special.... something I'm proud of, and to take a snapshot in time of a particular place that speaks to me. Something that invokes feeling. Upon examining the results from the festival... there were plenty of fun shots that reminded me of our wonderful trip. Some of Yusuke's were the only photos I've seen since being home that brings me back. It must be the dynamic range of film... the sense of depth, and feeling. Most of the digital snaps were fun, but were so flat. It also means more time behind the lens for surfing and shooting things like rusty vans, single fins, kooks, and salty seafarers. Im going to Maine with Cyrus Sutton soon and headed up the coast to New Jersey. Ive blown the dust off some vintage cameras and will be shooting with them in the coming weeks for upcoming projects with Pop Magazine, Cooler, Drift, and Korduroy TV. My current quiver consists of a 1971 fully manual Canon FTb, a late 1960s era waterproof Nikonos II for some much needed in-the-water shots, a trusty Holga, a Polaroid land camera, and a late 1960s era Olympus Pen EE Half Frame. Thrift stores and friends may yield other gems in the future. Maybe its an evolution or maybe its a step back. Hopefully both.

PICARESQUE REVIEW

photos Ryan Tatar / art Ty Williams

Right before Japan, Mikey DeTemple and the band BLORR cruised over to mi casa to show Picaresque in downtown Wilmington. Its a beautiful film shot in 16mm and has no dialogue. Just a really cool and unique indie soundtrack and good logging from Mikey, Christian Wach, Rob Kulisek, Harrison Roach, and others. My amigo Ty Williams did all of the artwork for the movie and I think it added a really cool touch to the project. Dustin Miller, who was the director of photography, sadly wasnt able to make it, but his film was rad and well received (except by 1 guy) and we were all stoked to have Mikey and BLORR in town. One of my favorite parts of the film was the purchasing of an old single fin at a thrift store in California and Chris Christenson ripping off the glass, re-shaping, and re-glassing it into a hull-ish shape. The board really moves in the film, and I got to put my hands on the knifey rails of this thing.... really insane. Wish I had that one in my quiver. The Picaresque tour is back stateside and will be stopping in New York City at the Mollusk on Tuesday. Be sure to check out this film. Its a great film. One of my favorite new surfy films to date.

One guy didn't get it and punched Mikey on the way out.

SWITCH-FOOT RELOADED

art Harry Daily

My amigo in Oz, a talented guy named Andrew Crockett (or AC), has been slowly compiling a new Switch-foot book. If you're not familiar with the original switch-foot book I'll post some more on it in the coming weeks. It's a beautifully bound book that deals with art, music, and surfing. I was lucky enough to be asked to contribute to this wonderful piece of surf culture along with guys like George Greenough, Ryan Heywood, Harry Daily, and 90 others.

Here's something Andrew sent me about the new book:

Hey Ryan, well done on Shakas man, i enjoy checking it out
because seriously the content you have is way more relevant
to me than what they are trying to say in the printed 'surfing magazines.'

The second switch-foot book has been four years in the making
and has 90 contributors and over 300 pages, i am calling it
'another megalith of stoke from the other side of surfing.' The title
of the book is 'Switch-Foot Re-loaded' and it will be available through
the switch-foot.com website from October the 12th. The first book
has not been available in Australia for at least a year, so it will be great
to have something fresh out there, and we hope to have a second edition
of the first book available sometime in 2010.

Since the first book came out 'the other side of surfing' has mushroomed
and it seems style, art and creativeness are where the stoke is and man
is there some talent out there. So many nice films and interesting surfboards,
kooky characters, beautiful photographs and passionate people making
and creating things for us to enjoy. I hope the next switch-foot book is one
of those things, and I look forward to sending you one for review in
the coming months.
